A Highland Schoolgirl, 1895

Mary Ann Mackenzie – A Highland Schoolgirl, 1895 is told through the eyes of a real girl aged 9, offering a rare insight into the school day and home life of a child from Scoraig, in the northwest Highlands of Scotland in 1895. Mary Ann’s recollections of her childhood are combined with extensive research, photographs and extracts from the school log book, bringing rural childhood in the Highlands in the late nineteenth century, vividly to life.

Siobhan Beatson, Manager, Ullapool Museum, stated: ‘Claire’s book will fill a gap in the research that is present both at a local and national level and will act as a baseline for further research.’
