In November 1879 the Estate and crofting township of Leckmelm on the shores of Lochbroom in the North West Highlands, was bought by Mr A G Pirie, a paper manufacturer from Aberdeenshire. His first act as new landlord was to inform his tenants that he intended to take their lands into his own hands. Their subsequent evictions caused an international uproar that reached all the way to the top of the UK Government.
